Happy New Year! This is a short issue of the ETO's newsletter (regular features to return for the next issue) but we wanted to kick of the Winter 2024 term with a few recommendations and reminders. We're focusing on tips that you can complete (or things that you should know) before your class launches next week.

  2. Organize your Quercus course dashboard

ACADEMIC TOOLBOX TIP
2. Find out what's changed in the Academic Toolbox (since September 2023)

What's changed in the past few months? The January 2024 update highlights updates to the Crowdmark Exam Matcher, information about MS Copilot for staff and faculty, a reminder about changes to Ed Discussion, and new options in Quercus Calendar.

  1. Crowdmark: Updates to Exam Matcher
  2. MS Copilot: Access for faculty, staff, and librarians
  3. Ed Discussion: Access Update Reminder
  4. Quercus Calendar: Options for recurring events and events for different sections

LECTURE CAPTURE TIP
3. Enable auto-recording of your course (using OpenCast)

Whether or not you plan to release recordings of your class sessions to your students, we always recommend enabling OpenCast (see if your classroom has this built-in content capturing tool using LSM's Instructor Portal). It comes in handy when you are supporting an accommodation request, if you want to review your own teaching practice, or if you decide that you'd like to release the recordings openly to your class via your Quercus course. For more information, see our overview of OpenCast's features
Read the OpenCast Operation Guide

QUICK TECH TIP

Set the default browser in MS Teams

If you've downloaded the latest version of MS Teams, you might have noticed that when you open links shared via Teams they are opening in Microsoft Edge. If Edge is not your primary browser, you can change how links open by following the instructions in this Quick Tech Tip.

How to change how links open in MS Teams

  1. Open your MS Teams settings menu using the "..." icon.
  2. Select the "Files and links" advanced settings from the Settings menu on the left of your screen.
  3. Select "Default browser" from the "Always open links in" drop down menu.
