Open Access

The project, Working Safely with Sharps, is an openly accessible, scenario-based training module that is designed for instructors to implement in their courses. Completed in February 2024, this project was a collaboration between Environment Health and Safety (EHS), FASE Health and Safety, and the Education Technology Office (ETO). Our goal was to transform an existing one-hour training presentation into an interactive digital learning experience. If you are interested in learning more about this module, please contact FASE's Health and Safety Advisor.

Motivation: Knowing how to Work Safely with Sharps is everyone's responsibility. In this module, you will learn how to prevent and minimize sharps injury to yourself and others, how to safely dispose of sharps, and how to document and report sharps injuries. Please note that this module is just one part of your training and does not replace hands-on safety training.

Module Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recognize different kinds of sharps and the types of injuries they can cause
  2. Review strategies for preventing and reducing risk of sharps injuries (including proper handling and disposal)
  3. Identify correct procedures for getting treatment, reporting, and following-up on sharps injuries and near-misses
